Apple Could Launch New Apple Pencil Models With Replaceable Batteries in 2027


Apple may be planning one of the biggest updates to the Apple Pencil in years. According to a new report, the company is developing refreshed versions of its stylus lineup that could debut alongside new iPad Pro models in spring 2027.

While the overall design may remain familiar, the biggest change could be hidden inside. Future Apple Pencil models are expected to feature batteries that users can replace themselves, helping Apple comply with new European Union regulations set to take effect in 2027.

Apple Pencil Refresh Reportedly Coming in 2027

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is working on updated versions of both its current stylus models:

  • Apple Pencil (USB-C)

  • Apple Pencil Pro

The new accessories are expected to launch with Apple's next-generation iPad Pro lineup in spring 2027.

Although Apple hasn't officially confirmed the report, the timing aligns with new European legislation that will require portable electronic devices to include batteries that users can easily remove and replace.

Why Apple Needs to Redesign the Apple Pencil

The driving force behind the redesign isn't necessarily a new feature. Instead, it appears to be regulatory compliance.

Under Article 11 of the European Union's Batteries Regulation, manufacturers must ensure portable batteries are removable and replaceable by end users. While the regulation was introduced in 2023, it becomes enforceable in February 2027.

This rule extends beyond smartphones and tablets. It also covers rechargeable accessories, including:

  • Styluses

  • Wireless headphones

  • Computer mice

  • Keyboards

  • Other portable electronic devices

That means Apple will likely need to rethink how several of its accessories are built.

Current Apple Pencil Batteries Aren't User Replaceable

Today's Apple Pencil models weren't designed with repairs in mind.

The USB-C Apple Pencil charges through its built-in USB-C port, while the Apple Pencil Pro recharges wirelessly by attaching magnetically to a compatible iPad.

However, if the internal battery begins losing capacity after years of use, replacing it isn't a simple task.

The stylus is held together using strong adhesives and compact internal components, making battery replacement nearly impossible without damaging the device. In most cases, users simply replace the entire accessory instead of repairing it.

A redesigned internal layout could change that by allowing easier battery access while maintaining the Pencil's slim profile.

  • Enhanced gesture controls

  • Longer battery life

  • New software integrations

Those details will likely emerge closer to launch as development progresses.
