Apple Upgrade Explained: Everything You Need to Know Before Leasing Your Next iPhone


Apple has officially replaced its iPhone Upgrade Program with a new leasing service called Apple Upgrade. Powered by Klarna, the program gives customers another way to get the latest Apple devices with lower monthly payments and flexible upgrade options.

While the program offers several advantages, there are also important rules and limitations that potential users should understand before signing up. Here's a closer look at how Apple Upgrade works and what you should know before choosing it.

What Is Apple Upgrade?

Apple Upgrade is a device leasing program that allows eligible customers to lease select Apple products rather than purchasing them outright.

The program covers:

  • iPhone

  • iPad

  • Mac

  • Apple Watch

Instead of financing a purchase, you're leasing the device for a fixed period. At the end of the lease, you can return it, upgrade to a newer model, or pay the remaining balance to keep it permanently.

Apple Upgrade Is Currently Available Only in the U.S.

At launch, Apple Upgrade is limited to customers in the United States. Apple has not announced plans to expand the program internationally.

If you're outside the U.S., you'll need to continue using your local financing or purchasing options until additional markets are supported.

Leased iPhones Are Carrier Compatible

Although customers must select a participating carrier during checkout, leased iPhones are unlocked.

Supported carriers include:

  • AT&T

  • Verizon

  • T-Mobile

Because the phones are unlocked, users can switch carriers later or activate an additional eSIM if needed.

A Postpaid Carrier Plan Is Required

One important requirement is that customers must already have a qualifying postpaid mobile plan.

Prepaid plans are not supported under the Apple Upgrade program.

Switching Phones? Protect Your Data First

Whether you're upgrading through Apple Upgrade or replacing an older device, protecting your personal files should be part of the process.

Do You Own the Device?

Not immediately.

Since Apple Upgrade is a lease rather than a purchase, ownership remains with the leasing provider until all required payments have been completed.

At the end of your lease, you'll have three options:

  • Return the device.

  • Upgrade to a newer eligible model.

  • Pay the remaining balance to keep the device.

What Happens If You Miss a Payment?

Apple Upgrade is more forgiving than many customers may expect.

Missing a single payment won't disable your device or limit access to apps. Instead, the unpaid amount is added to your following month's bill.

However, repeatedly missing payments can have more serious consequences.

Three Missed Payments Can End the Lease

According to Klarna's leasing terms, three consecutive missed payments automatically terminate the lease agreement.

If that happens:

  • The remaining balance becomes due.

  • Returning the leased device reduces the amount owed.

  • Failure to return the device or settle the balance could result in collection proceedings.

  • Missed payments may also affect your credit history.

AppleCare+ Is No Longer Included

Unlike the previous iPhone Upgrade Program, Apple Upgrade does not bundle AppleCare+ into the monthly lease payment.

Customers who want coverage for accidental damage or repairs must purchase AppleCare+ separately.

Without AppleCare+, any damage found when returning the device could result in additional repair charges.

Trade-Ins Still Work Differently

Apple continues to accept eligible trade-ins when starting a new lease.

Instead of applying the trade-in value as an upfront discount, the credit is spread across your monthly payments.

One limitation is that you cannot trade in your current leased device during an upgrade. It must first be returned under the lease agreement.

Other Important Things to Know

Here are several additional details worth remembering:

  • Apple Upgrade uses only a soft credit check during application.

  • Paying off your lease early is allowed without penalties.

  • Ending a lease early requires paying the remaining balance before returning the device.

  • Education pricing cannot be combined with Apple Upgrade.

  • Refurbished Apple products are not eligible.

  • Some entry-level devices are excluded, including certain iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches.

  • Apple Card Monthly Installments remain available for customers who prefer traditional financing and full ownership.

Is Apple Upgrade Worth It?

Apple Upgrade is designed for people who regularly upgrade to newer Apple devices and prefer predictable monthly payments instead of paying the full purchase price upfront.

For users who like having the latest hardware every few years, the leasing model may offer added flexibility. However, customers who plan to keep their devices for a long time may find traditional financing or purchasing outright to be a better long-term value.

Before enrolling, compare the total lease cost, AppleCare+ pricing, and your upgrade habits to determine which option best fits your budget and usage.
