Apple's Foldable iPhone Could Follow the iPhone X Launch Strategy, Says Analyst


Apple's long-rumored foldable iPhone is expected to make its official debut later this year, but buyers may have to wait longer than anticipated before placing an order.

According to well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is likely to introduce the foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max during its September event. However, pre-orders for the foldable model may not begin until weeks later due to limited production.

If accurate, Apple would be repeating a launch strategy similar to the one it used for the iPhone X back in 2017.

Apple May Separate the Announcement and Pre-Order Dates

The iPhone X followed an unusual release schedule when it launched.

Apple announced the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X during the same keynote. While the iPhone 8 models became available for pre-order within days, customers had to wait more than a month before they could reserve the iPhone X.

Kuo believes Apple may adopt the same strategy for its first foldable iPhone. Although the device is still expected to be unveiled in September, pre-orders may not open until sometime in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The delay is reportedly linked to manufacturing challenges rather than a change in Apple's launch plans.

Limited Production Could Make the Foldable iPhone Hard to Buy

Production estimates suggest Apple will manufacture far fewer foldable iPhones than its traditional flagship models.

Industry projections indicate suppliers will produce approximately 7 to 8 million foldable iPhones during 2026. By comparison, Apple is expected to ship roughly 20 to 22 million combined units of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max over the same period.

With significantly lower inventory available, early demand could easily outpace supply.

Kuo predicts the device may sell out almost immediately after pre-orders begin, with shipping estimates extending to four to six weeks or even longer.

Premium Pricing Expected for Apple's First Foldable

Apple's first foldable smartphone is expected to target the ultra-premium market.

Current estimates suggest the device could start between $2,299 and $2,499 in the United States, making it the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever released.

Although Apple has yet to confirm specifications, previous reports point to a book-style foldable design featuring a large internal display, premium materials, and flagship performance.
