Apple's Foldable iPhone Ultra Could Sell Out Fast as Supply Faces Early Challenges


Apple's long-rumored foldable iPhone appears to be getting closer to reality. Although the company has yet to officially confirm the device, new reports suggest the premium handset could launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup later this year.

However, prospective buyers may need to be patient. Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes Apple will face production constraints during the early stages, making the foldable iPhone Ultra one of the hardest devices to purchase at launch.

Apple May Struggle to Meet Initial Demand

According to Kuo, Apple is expected to manufacture only 500,000 to 1 million foldable iPhone Ultra units during the initial production phase.

The limited supply isn't expected to reflect weak demand. Instead, it's reportedly the result of manufacturing challenges associated with Apple's first foldable design.

Kuo believes Apple could follow a strategy similar to the launch of the iPhone X in 2017. The company may unveil the foldable iPhone alongside the rest of its flagship lineup, while delaying pre-orders and retail availability until production catches up.

If that happens, customers could face longer waiting times before getting their hands on the new device.

Foldable iPhone Ultra Rumors Continue to Grow

As Apple's expected September launch event approaches, leaks surrounding the foldable iPhone have become increasingly frequent.

Current reports suggest the device may feature:

  • A 5.5-inch outer display

  • A 7.8-inch foldable inner display

  • A wider 4:3 aspect ratio similar to an iPad

  • Premium foldable hardware and design

The larger unfolded display could position the iPhone Ultra somewhere between a smartphone and a compact tablet, giving users more room for multitasking, gaming, reading, and media consumption.

While Apple has not confirmed any specifications, multiple supply chain reports continue pointing toward a foldable model arriving later this year.

The foldable iPhone Ultra is also expected to become Apple's most expensive smartphone to date.

Current estimates place the starting price between $2,299 and $2,499, making it considerably more expensive than today's iPhone Pro models.

Despite the premium price, Kuo expects demand to remain exceptionally strong. He believes the device could sell out almost immediately after pre-orders open, especially if production remains limited during the first few months.

Analysts also expect delivery estimates to stretch several weeks beyond launch due to supply shortages.

Production Could Improve Later in the Year

Although initial supply may be tight, Apple is expected to gradually increase production throughout the year.

Kuo estimates suppliers could manufacture 7 to 8 million foldable iPhone Ultra units before the end of the production cycle, compared to an estimated 20 to 22 million iPhone 18 Pro models during the same period.

That difference highlights Apple's cautious approach as it enters the foldable smartphone market for the first time.
