Google Photos Adds Classic Search Toggle to Ask Photos for Faster Photo Searches


Google Photos is making it easier for users to search their photo libraries by introducing a new Classic Search toggle for Ask Photos. The update gives users greater control over how they search, allowing them to switch between traditional keyword-based searches and Google's AI-powered Ask Photos feature.

The change addresses one of the biggest frustrations users had with Ask Photos by making it much easier to choose the search method that best fits the task.

Classic Search and AI Search Now Work Together

Instead of forcing users to rely entirely on AI, Google now lets both search methods coexist.

With the latest update, Google Photos displays a new toggle at the top of the search results page. Users can quickly switch between:

  • Classic Search, which uses familiar keyword-based searches.

  • Ask Photos, Google's AI-powered search assistant that understands natural language questions.

This gives users more flexibility depending on what they're trying to find.

Simple searches like a location, person's name, or object can still be completed using the traditional search experience, while more detailed questions can take advantage of Google's AI.

AI Automatically Handles More Complex Searches

Google's new system is also smart enough to recognize when AI can provide better results.

For example, if you ask a detailed question such as "What's my license plate?", Google Photos automatically switches to Ask Photos because AI is better equipped to analyze images and understand context.

Once that happens, Ask Photos remains active until users manually switch back to Classic Search using the new toggle.

This creates a smoother experience without removing user control.

Organizing Your Photos Before Switching Phones
