iOS 27 Changes Notification Center Gesture as Siri AI Takes Center Stage
Apple is giving the iPhone's interface one of its biggest navigation updates in years.
With iOS 27, users who enable Siri AI will notice that opening Notification Center no longer works the way it has for more than a decade. Instead of pulling down from the center of the screen's top edge, that gesture is now reserved for Apple's new AI-powered assistant.
It's a subtle change, but one that millions of iPhone and iPad users will need time to adjust to.
Notification Center Gets a New Home
Since iOS 5 launched in 2011, Notification Center has served as the central hub for alerts, reminders, and app notifications.
Until now, users could simply swipe down from the middle of the top edge of the display to access it.
That changes in iOS 27.
When Siri AI is enabled, swiping down from the center now launches Apple's redesigned AI assistant instead of opening notifications.
To view your notifications, you'll need to swipe down from the top-left corner of the display.
Apple has also updated the animation so notifications slide in naturally from the left side, reinforcing the new location.
Siri AI Becomes the Primary Gesture
Apple is clearly making Siri AI one of the biggest features of iOS 27.
Rather than hiding the assistant behind a button or voice command, the company is dedicating most of the top edge of the display to launching Siri with a simple swipe.
The assistant can still be activated using familiar methods, including the Side button and the "Hey Siri" voice command, but the new gesture gives users instant access without speaking.
It's another sign that Apple wants Siri AI to become part of everyday iPhone interactions instead of an occasional feature.
Managing Your New iPhone After an Update
Major iOS updates often encourage users to organize their devices, clean up storage, and better manage everyday content.
If you're sorting through thousands of images after updating, Smart Transfer can help simplify the process. Beyond device migration, it also includes a built-in photo gallery manager that helps organize your media library. Combined with its speed test app feature, users can also check network performance before transferring large files or syncing content between devices.
For anyone regularly exchanging photos, videos, or documents, Smart Transfer also supports share me file sharing, making it easier to move content between compatible devices without relying on complicated workflows. It provides a convenient way to keep your files organized while preparing for a new phone or a major software update.
iPad Users Will See Similar Changes
The new navigation isn't limited to iPhones.
iPadOS 27 introduces the same gesture changes, although Apple has refined the experience throughout the beta period.
Earlier beta versions gave Siri AI an unusually large activation area, leaving only a small portion of the screen available for Notification Center.
In later beta releases, Apple adjusted the layout to create a more balanced interface:
Top-left corner opens Notification Center.
Top-right corner opens Control Center.
The remaining center area activates Siri AI.
The result is a cleaner layout that feels more consistent across Apple's devices.
A Big Shift After 15 Years
Apple rarely changes long-established navigation gestures.
One of the last major adjustments came with the iPhone X, when Control Center moved from a bottom swipe to a top-right swipe as the Home button disappeared.
Now, Notification Center is receiving a similar redesign.
For users who have spent years swiping from the center of the screen, the transition may take some practice. Muscle memory doesn't disappear overnight, especially for gestures performed dozens of times every day.
Interestingly, some longtime iPhone owners have pointed out they already accessed notifications from the top-left corner, meaning the update may have little impact on their daily routine.
Early Feedback on Siri AI Looks Encouraging
While navigation changes often divide opinion, Apple's redesigned Siri AI has received largely positive early impressions from beta testers.
The assistant is faster, more context-aware, and far more capable than previous versions. Combined with deeper system integration, Siri AI appears to be one of the defining features of iOS 27.
That makes Apple's decision to prioritize quick access through a dedicated swipe gesture easier to understand, even if it means changing a familiar habit.
When Will iOS 27 Launch?
iOS 27 is currently available through both the Developer Beta and Public Beta programs.
Apple is expected to release the final version alongside its next iPhone lineup in early September.
Until then, users testing the beta can begin getting used to the updated navigation, because the new Notification Center gesture appears likely to remain part of the final release.
