OnePlus Replaces OxygenOS With ColorOS: What Current Users Need to Know


OnePlus is undergoing one of the biggest changes in its history. After confirming its withdrawal from several global markets, the company has now announced that OxygenOS will be phased out in favor of Oppo's ColorOS.

For longtime OnePlus fans, this marks the end of a software experience that helped define the brand. However, the company says existing users will continue receiving software updates and security support, although future updates will arrive through a different operating system.

OxygenOS Is Being Replaced by ColorOS

Beginning with Android 17, eligible OnePlus smartphones will have the option to upgrade from OxygenOS to ColorOS.

According to the company, the move is part of a broader effort to simplify software development across Oppo's smartphone brands. By maintaining a single software platform, Oppo aims to deliver updates more efficiently while improving software quality and making better use of shared engineering resources.

Although the change may seem significant, it isn't entirely unexpected. In recent years, OxygenOS and ColorOS have become increasingly similar, sharing much of the same underlying code and many core features.

Why OnePlus Is Making This Change

OxygenOS was once one of OnePlus' biggest selling points, thanks to its clean interface and smooth performance. Over time, however, the differences between OxygenOS and ColorOS became much smaller.

By adopting a single operating system, Oppo can focus its development efforts on one platform instead of maintaining multiple software experiences across different brands.

This strategy should allow the company to:

OnePlus isn't the only Oppo-owned brand making the switch.

Realme has also confirmed plans to adopt ColorOS beginning with Android 17. This reinforces Oppo's strategy of creating a more unified software ecosystem across its smartphone portfolio.

By standardizing the operating system, the company hopes to streamline development while delivering a more consistent experience across multiple brands.

What This Means for OnePlus Users

The transition from OxygenOS to ColorOS marks the end of an era for OnePlus, but it doesn't necessarily mean a worse experience. Because the two operating systems have gradually become more alike over the past few years, many users may notice only modest changes in everyday use.

For current OnePlus owners, the most important takeaway is that software updates and security support will continue for eligible devices. While the familiar OxygenOS name may disappear, OnePlus says its commitment to supporting existing customers remains unchanged as the company enters its next chapter.
