Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 Adds App Lock for Better Pixel Security


Google's latest Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 update includes a feature that could make Pixel phones considerably more private. The new App Lock option lets users protect individual apps with an additional authentication step, meaning unlocking the phone itself is no longer enough to access everything stored on it.

The feature arrived somewhat unexpectedly in the beta, but it addresses a simple problem: sometimes protecting the entire phone is not enough.

Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 Introduces App Lock

After installing Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3, Pixel users can long-press an app icon to bring up its shortcut menu. If the feature is available on the device, a new App Lock option appears alongside the other actions.

Once App Lock is enabled, opening that application requires additional authentication. Depending on the security methods configured on the phone, users can verify their identity with a fingerprint, face unlock or their device pattern.

This creates a second barrier between someone and the sensitive information inside individual applications.

Why App Lock Could Be Useful

Your phone's lock screen already provides an important layer of protection, but there are situations where someone could gain access after the device has been unlocked.

Google Still Allows Certain AI Access

There is one interesting exception in the way App Lock works.

Google notes that AI agents and services that already have permission to access a protected application can continue doing so. In other words, App Lock protects the application from someone manually opening it, but it does not necessarily revoke permissions that have already been granted to Google's AI features or other authorized services.

That distinction is worth keeping in mind if you use AI-powered features that interact with information stored inside your apps.

How to Enable App Lock on a Pixel

The quickest way to lock an application is to find its icon on your Pixel and long-press it. If the feature is enabled on your version of Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3, select App Lock from the menu.

Google also provides centralized controls through Settings. From there, you can view your installed applications and choose which ones should require additional authentication.

This makes it easier to manage multiple protected apps without opening each application shortcut individually.
