Apple May Finally Bring Cross-Device Copy and Paste Between iPhone and Windows

Apple could soon make working between an iPhone and a Windows PC much easier. Following a request from Microsoft under the European Union's Digital Markets Act, Apple has confirmed it is developing a new interoperability feature that will allow users to copy and paste content across the two platforms.

While Apple's Universal Clipboard already offers this experience within its own ecosystem, Windows users have been left without a comparable option. That could change with a future iOS update.

Apple Responds to Microsoft's Interoperability Request

Microsoft submitted its request to Apple earlier this year, asking for a way to synchronize clipboard content between an iPhone and a Windows PC.

According to Microsoft, users increasingly expect cross-device workflows to feel seamless, regardless of the operating system they're using. The company argued that copying text, images, or other supported content between devices should happen naturally without requiring users to repeatedly open apps or manually initiate transfers.

After reviewing the proposal, Apple confirmed it would move forward with developing an interoperability solution.

How the New Clipboard Feature Will Work

Apple plans to introduce a developer framework that allows approved extensions to detect when content has been copied to an iPhone's clipboard.

Those extensions can then securely transfer the clipboard data to a paired device, such as a Windows PC, using Apple's Accessory Transport Extension framework.

To protect user privacy, Apple says users will need to grant permission before clipboard data can be shared with each paired device. The company also plans to rely on its existing AccessorySetupKit framework to manage these permissions.

Rather than offering unrestricted clipboard access, Apple appears focused on creating a controlled system that balances convenience with security.

Easier File Sharing Across Devices

As people work across multiple platforms, moving files between phones and computers has become just as important as copying text.

Apps like Smart Transfer help simplify file sharing by allowing users to transfer photos, videos, documents, contacts, and other supported files between compatible devices. Whether you're setting up a new phone or organizing content across multiple devices, having a reliable solution reduces the hassle of manual transfers.

Smart Transfer also supports secure file sharing, helping protect your personal content while it moves between devices. If you're replacing an older smartphone, the app makes it easy to copy phone file data so your important files are ready on your new device without unnecessary complications.

Productivity Could Improve for Windows Users

If implemented successfully, the new clipboard feature would make everyday workflows much smoother.

Users could:

  • Copy text on an iPhone and instantly paste it into Windows applications.

  • Move supported clipboard content between devices without repeatedly opening transfer apps.

  • Enjoy a more consistent experience similar to Apple's Universal Clipboard.

For professionals who regularly switch between iPhones and Windows PCs, this could eliminate several extra steps during daily tasks.

Will the Feature Be Available Worldwide?

At the moment, the answer is uncertain.

Apple is developing the feature in response to interoperability requirements introduced by the European Union. That means the initial rollout could be limited to EU users.

The company has not confirmed whether the functionality will eventually expand to other regions.

When Could It Launch?

Apple describes the project as a significant engineering effort, suggesting it won't arrive immediately.

Current plans indicate development could be completed by fall 2027, with a developer beta released shortly afterward before the public rollout.

Although Apple hasn't officially named the software version, industry expectations suggest the feature could debut as part of iOS 28.

Final Thoughts

Apple's decision to support clipboard sharing between iPhones and Windows PCs marks an important step toward improving cross-platform compatibility.

While the feature will likely maintain Apple's strong focus on privacy and user consent, it has the potential to make everyday productivity much more convenient for millions of users who rely on both ecosystems. If everything stays on schedule, seamless copy-and-paste functionality between iPhone and Windows could finally become a reality over the next year.
