Google Pixel 11 Pro XL Hands-On: Familiar Design, New Tensor Power and Smarter Camera Features
Google's new Pixel 11 lineup has arrived, and the first unboxing experience reveals a familiar story. At first glance, the phones do not appear dramatically different from their predecessors. The design language remains recognizably Pixel, and several core hardware specifications look similar on paper.
But spend a little more time with the Google Pixel 11 Pro XL, and some of the changes start to stand out.
The biggest Pixel in the new lineup brings Google's latest Tensor processor, improved AI capabilities, a revised telephoto camera system, and a few new software-driven features. Here is an early look at what the Pixel 11 Pro XL brings to the table.
Google Pixel 11 Pro XL: The Largest Phone in the Lineup
The Pixel 11 Pro XL is the biggest of Google's three new flagship models, and its size is immediately noticeable.
At 226 grams, it is a substantial device. It is tall, wide, and has the same general physical presence as the Pixel 10 Pro XL. In fact, the dimensions remain very close to the previous model, so anyone expecting a major design overhaul may be left wanting more.
The battery capacity has actually dropped slightly. The Pixel 11 Pro XL features a 5,115mAh battery compared with the 5,200mAh unit found in its predecessor.
Charging specifications also appear largely unchanged, with support for 45W wired charging and 25W wireless charging.
For users upgrading from an older Pixel, the familiar design could be either reassuring or disappointing. It depends on what you expect from a new generation.
Tensor G6 Is the Biggest Hardware Upgrade
The most important change inside the Pixel 11 Pro XL is the new Tensor G6 processor.
Interestingly, Google's latest chip has seven CPU cores instead of the eight found in the previous-generation Tensor G5. However, fewer cores do not necessarily mean less performance.
The new processor introduces Google's C1-Ultra high-performance core alongside updated C1-Pro cores, replacing the older core configuration used in the Tensor G5.
According to Google's performance figures, the Tensor G6 delivers:
Up to 25% faster web browsing
Around 15% faster app launches
50% more TPU compute capacity
Up to 3.5 times faster on-device AI performance
Up to 3.5 times lower energy use for supported AI tasks
Of course, these figures come from Google, so independent testing will be needed to determine how much of the improvement translates into everyday use.
Still, the Tensor G6 appears to be the most meaningful generational upgrade for the Pixel 11 series.
Moving Files to a New Pixel Should Not Be the Hard Part

Camera Hardware Is Familiar, With One Notable Change
The Pixel 11 Pro XL does not introduce a complete camera hardware overhaul.
The main camera retains a 25mm f/1.7 lens and a 1/1.30-inch optical format, making it broadly similar to the camera system used on the previous generation.
The telephoto camera is where the specifications become more interesting. The new model uses a 106mm f/2.8 zoom camera, compared with the 113mm lens on the Pixel 10 Pro XL.
More importantly, the sensor is larger at 1/1.95 inches, compared with the 1/2.55-inch sensor used previously. On paper, that could help improve image quality, particularly in situations where the camera benefits from capturing more light.
The ultrawide and front-facing cameras appear to remain largely unchanged.
Magic Capture Wants You to Look Up From Your Phone
One of the more interesting additions is Magic Capture, a new camera feature designed around a familiar problem.
Important moments often happen while we are trying to record them. Instead of actually watching what is happening, we end up staring at a screen and hoping the camera catches the right second.
Magic Capture takes a different approach. Once activated, the feature can capture both photos and video while automatically selecting the strongest moments.
The idea is simple: let the phone handle more of the recording process so you can spend less time watching life through a display.
How well this works in real-world situations will be one of the more interesting things to test.
HiLight Adds LEDs Around the Camera, But Early Issues Have Appeared
Google has also introduced a feature called HiLight, which uses colored LEDs around the camera flash.
When the Pixel 11 Pro XL is placed face-down, the LEDs can illuminate for calls from favorite contacts or during interactions with Gemini.
It is an interesting visual addition, giving the phone another way to communicate information without relying entirely on the display.
However, the feature appears to be experiencing some early problems. Reports have surfaced from users who have been unable to get HiLight working properly, and the issue does not appear to be limited to a single device.
Google will likely need to address these reports through software updates if the problem proves to be widespread.
Google Pixel 11 Pro XL Storage, Colors and What Is in the Box
The Pixel 11 Pro XL is available in several storage and memory configurations:
12GB RAM with 256GB storage
16GB RAM with 512GB storage
16GB RAM with 1TB storage
Color options include Canyon, Fog, Olive, and Obsidian.
The Fog version has a cool, slightly bluish silver appearance that gives the phone a softer look than the darker Obsidian finish.
Inside the box, buyers get a USB-C cable and little else.
Is the Pixel 11 Pro XL a Big Enough Upgrade?
The Pixel 11 Pro XL does not appear to be trying to reinvent Google's flagship formula.
The design remains familiar. Battery capacity is slightly lower than before, and much of the camera hardware looks similar to the previous generation.
Instead, Google seems to be focusing on improvements that happen beneath the surface.
The Tensor G6 is the centerpiece, bringing updated CPU architecture and more powerful on-device AI capabilities. The larger telephoto sensor could also deliver a meaningful improvement, while features such as Magic Capture show Google's continued interest in making the camera experience more automated and less intrusive.
The Pixel 11 Pro XL may not create an immediate sense of surprise when you first take it out of the box. But the real question is whether its new processor, AI capabilities, camera improvements, and software features can make it feel noticeably better after weeks of everyday use.
That is where the real test begins.
