iOS 27 Beta 5 Brings Siri Tweaks, New App Icons and More

Apple has released the fifth developer beta of iOS 27, giving developers another look at the software update ahead of its expected public release. The latest build arrives three weeks after beta 4 and brings several visual and functional changes. While iOS 27 beta 1 introduced the long-awaited Siri AI experience, later versions expanded Apple Home, Apple Wallet and Siri customization. Beta 5 continues that work with additional Siri controls, refreshed app icons and a handful of smaller interface improvements.

Siri Gets More Voice Customization

One of the more noticeable changes in iOS 27 beta 5 involves Siri's voice options. The previous beta introduced Pace and Expressivity controls that allowed users to adjust how quickly Siri speaks and how much emotion or emphasis it uses. Those controls were initially limited to American English voices, but beta 5 expands them to British English voices as well. Users can find the options under Settings > Siri > Voice, where the available sliders provide several levels of customization.

There is a hardware catch, however. Apple's more advanced Siri AI features require at least 12GB of RAM, which limits some of the new capabilities to newer devices. The current beta supports these Siri voice controls on models such as the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air. So while iOS 27 will support a broader range of iPhones, not every device will receive every AI-powered feature.

Several iOS Apps Get New Icons

Apple has also made a series of visual changes in beta 5. The Preview, Remote, Safari, Settings and Siri app icons have received updated designs, while the Orders icon inside Apple Wallet has also been refreshed. The Siri icon now has a more prominent Liquid Glass appearance, while Safari's redesigned icon includes a dot in the center.

Apple has also introduced new introductory screens that appear when users first open apps such as Wallet, Music, App Store and Photos. None of these changes fundamentally alters how the apps work, but together they give iOS 27 a more polished appearance as Apple moves toward the final release.

Settings Gets a New Search Option

Another small but useful addition can be found in the Settings app. Under Search Settings, Apple has added a new Before Searching option that gives users more control over how many app suggestions appear before they complete a search. This could be helpful for anyone who frequently relies on search and wants to reduce the amount of information displayed before entering a query.

Apple has also added information showing when the most recent iOS update was installed. For users who rely on automatic updates, this provides an easy way to check when their iPhone last received a software update without having to remember when the installation happened.

Control Center and Screenshots Get Small Refinements

The Control Center has received a subtle change as well. In iOS 27 beta 5, cellular network labels such as 5G and LTE are no longer displayed in Control Center when the iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi. Instead, Apple has adjusted the cellular indicators in both Control Center and the Status Bar.

Screenshot editing has also received a minor visual adjustment. After taking a screenshot, the annotation toolbar now shrinks and appears as a floating element rather than occupying as much space on the screen. It does not introduce new editing tools, but it gives the interface a cleaner appearance.

Moving Your Data to a New iPhone

As iOS becomes more capable, upgrading to a new iPhone can also mean bringing more personal content with you. Photos, videos, documents, contacts and other files can quickly accumulate over several years, making the setup process more time-consuming than simply signing into your Apple Account.

Smart Transfer can help simplify that part of the upgrade by giving users a convenient way to move important content to a new device. Instead of manually searching through folders and sending files individually, a transfer app can make it easier to organize the content you want to take with you. Its fast share capabilities can also be useful when moving photos, videos and other selected files during the setup process, while easy file sharing gives users more flexibility over what they actually transfer.

iOS 27 Beta 5 Focuses on Polish

Overall, iOS 27 beta 5 is more about refinement than major new features. The expanded Siri voice controls are the biggest functional addition, while the redesigned icons, new search setting and smaller interface changes continue to polish the operating system.

That makes sense at this stage of development. With the public release getting closer, Apple is moving away from introducing major features and concentrating on making the existing experience feel more complete. For everyday users, beta 5 may not completely transform the iPhone, but the collection of smaller improvements should help iOS 27 feel more finished when it officially arrives.
