iPhone Ultra Could Be the Name of Apple's First Foldable

Apple's first foldable iPhone is getting closer, and one question that has followed the device almost as closely as its design is what Apple will actually call it.

For months, the upcoming foldable has been referred to as the iPhone Fold in leaks and reports. More recently, however, another name has gained traction: iPhone Ultra.

Now, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says that the Ultra name is reportedly being used inside Apple itself.

Apple Employees Are Reportedly Calling It iPhone Ultra

Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone at its September event.

While "iPhone Fold" has been the obvious unofficial name because of the device's form factor, reports earlier this year began pointing toward iPhone Ultra as a possible final product name.

That speculation has now received another boost.

Mark Gurman reportedly said that "Everyone calls it the Ultra internally." If accurate, that suggests the name is not simply something created by outside leakers. At least some Apple employees appear to be using Ultra when referring to the upcoming foldable.

That is an interesting development, but it still falls short of confirming what will appear on the retail box.

Does Internal Naming Mean the iPhone Ultra Name Is Confirmed?

Not necessarily.

Apple is famously secretive about unreleased products, and even employees working at the company may not have access to information outside their particular projects.

That means an internal name can exist without becoming the final marketing name.

There is also another possibility. If "iPhone Ultra" has become the most common name among people discussing the product, employees could simply be using it as a convenient reference. The internal name may not necessarily reflect Apple's final branding strategy.

Why "Ultra" Would Make Sense for Apple's Foldable
