That makes the upcoming iPhone Ultra vs. Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra comparison particularly interesting. Apple's first foldable iPhone is expected to arrive at its September event, while Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has already established itself as one of the most ambitious foldables available.

Apple has the advantage of entering the category with years of competition to study. Samsung, meanwhile, has generations of experience refining the format. So which approach looks more promising?

Design: Apple Could Choose Comfort Over Thinness

The biggest difference may be the way these phones feel in your hand.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra focuses heavily on being thin and lightweight, while leaked dimensions suggest Apple is taking a broader approach with the iPhone Ultra. The rumored Apple foldable could have a shorter, wider shape that resembles a small passport when opened.

That could make a meaningful difference. A wider outer profile may be easier to operate with one hand, while the rumored 4:3 inner display should provide a more natural canvas for reading, multitasking and running two apps side by side.

Samsung still wins on the numbers. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is reportedly around 4.22mm thick when unfolded and weighs about 7.8 ounces. Apple's foldable is rumored to measure roughly 4.8mm and weigh between 8.1 and 8.5 ounces.

For everyday use, though, a slightly heavier phone could be a worthwhile trade for a more comfortable shape.

Display Crease: Can Apple Actually Hide It?

The foldable crease remains one of the industry's longest-running challenges.

Samsung has made considerable progress with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Its crease is still detectable, particularly when you run your finger across the display or view it from an angle, but it becomes difficult to notice when you're looking directly at the screen.

Apple is rumored to be targeting an almost invisible crease for the iPhone Ultra. If that proves accurate, it would give Apple's first foldable an immediate visual advantage.

Still, a completely crease-free foldable sounds more impressive on paper than it necessarily needs to be in practice. Samsung's current implementation is already subtle enough that the crease does not interfere with watching videos, browsing or multitasking.

Apple therefore has an opportunity to improve the experience, but it does not need to eliminate every trace of the fold to make a compelling device.

Cameras: Samsung Has the Hardware Advantage

This could be one of the clearest wins for Samsung.

Current leaks suggest the iPhone Ultra could use a dual-camera system consisting of a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultrawide. The notable omission is a dedicated telephoto camera.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra takes a more versatile approach with a triple-camera setup, including a 200MP main sensor, 50MP ultrawide and 10MP 3x telephoto.

Apple's computational photography could still make the iPhone Ultra an excellent point-and-shoot camera. But for users who want greater flexibility when photographing distant subjects, Samsung's dedicated telephoto lens gives the Fold 8 Ultra a clear advantage.

Samsung also offers tools such as Pro Video and Expert RAW, providing more manual control for photographers and mobile creators.

Performance and Battery Life

Performance should be extremely strong on both phones.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra uses a Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor, while the iPhone Ultra is rumored to feature Apple's next-generation A20 Pro chip. Apple's chip could be built using a 2nm process, potentially giving the foldable excellent performance and efficiency.

For most buyers, however, raw benchmark numbers are unlikely to determine the decision. Both devices should have more than enough power for demanding apps, gaming and multitasking.

Battery life could be more interesting. Samsung's foldable packs a 5,000mAh battery and has reportedly achieved 14 hours and 33 minutes in battery testing. Apple's rumored split-battery design could provide approximately 4,883mAh.

Capacity alone does not tell the whole story. Apple's hardware and iOS power management could help close the gap, but Samsung has already set a high standard for endurance.

Software Could Be Apple's Secret Weapon

Hardware may attract attention, but software could ultimately determine which foldable feels better.

Samsung has had years to optimize Android for large foldable displays, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra can run multiple apps simultaneously. Samsung DeX also allows the phone to function more like a desktop computer when connected to an external display.

Apple has a different opportunity. The rumored 4:3 inner screen resembles the proportions of an iPad more closely than many existing foldables, potentially making app scaling easier. If Apple can convince developers to properly optimize their apps for the larger display, the iPhone Ultra could feel polished from the moment it opens.

That is a big "if." Foldable software has historically struggled with inconsistent layouts when apps move between the outer and inner displays.

If Apple gets this right, its software ecosystem could become one of the iPhone Ultra's biggest advantages.

Apple could counter with a wider design, a potentially less noticeable crease and tighter integration between its hardware and software.

Based on what we know so far, Samsung has the stronger position on hardware. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra offers impressive cameras, excellent battery endurance, powerful performance and mature foldable software.

Apple's opportunity is different. It does not need to win every specification battle. If the iPhone Ultra delivers a more comfortable form factor, a genuinely subtle crease and software that makes the larger display feel effortless, it could offer something Samsung does not.

And that is what makes this comparison so interesting. Samsung is refining a category it helped establish. Apple is entering it with the benefit of watching everyone else make the mistakes first.

The winner may not be the foldable with the longest specification sheet. It may be the one that makes you forget you're using a foldable at all.
