Pixel 11 Pro Telephoto Camera Gets a Surprisingly Useful Upgrade

The Pixel 11 Pro has several camera upgrades that did not get much attention when Google introduced the phone. One of the more interesting changes involves the telephoto camera, which now uses a larger sensor while keeping the familiar 48-megapixel resolution.

That hardware change appears to bring another benefit that Google has not emphasized. According to an early hands-on comparison shared by a Pixel user, the Pixel 11 Pro's telephoto camera can reportedly focus on subjects much closer to the phone than the equivalent camera on the Pixel 9 Pro.

It may sound like a small improvement, but closer focusing can give a telephoto lens significantly more flexibility.

Pixel 11 Pro telephoto camera uses a larger sensor

The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro both use Sony's IMX858 for their telephoto cameras. It is a 48MP sensor measuring 1/2.55 inches.

Google has changed that hardware for the Pixel 11 Pro. The new phone reportedly uses a 48MP sensor measuring 1/1.95 inches, although the exact sensor model has not yet been publicly identified.

That is a meaningful increase in sensor size while maintaining the same resolution. A larger sensor can provide benefits in challenging lighting conditions, potentially allowing the camera to capture more light and preserve more detail in darker scenes.

The Pixel 11 Pro can reportedly focus much closer

The more unexpected improvement is the telephoto camera's focusing range.

Reddit user pcman2000 shared a comparison between the Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro, with both phones using their telephoto cameras at the minimum focus distance. In the comparison, the Pixel 11 Pro produced a sharp image of a nearby box, while the Pixel 9 Pro's result was noticeably out of focus.

The user estimated that the Pixel 11 Pro could focus from roughly half the distance of the Pixel 9 Pro, or potentially even closer. There are no official minimum-focus-distance figures from Google yet, so that estimate should be treated as an observation rather than a confirmed specification.

Why closer telephoto focusing actually matters

Telephoto cameras are usually associated with distant subjects, but that does not mean they need to stay far away from the subject.

Being able to focus closer gives photographers more options when composing a shot. You can use the tighter field of view to isolate nearby objects, capture details without physically moving closer, or create a different perspective than you would get from the main camera.

It also means you may not need to switch between lenses as often. That added flexibility is particularly useful when photographing food, flowers, small products, or other relatively close subjects.

Google did not highlight this camera upgrade

Interestingly, Google did not make the closer focusing capability part of its main Pixel 11 Pro camera messaging.

That makes the discovery feel more like a bonus than a headline feature. The larger telephoto sensor is already an important hardware change, particularly for low-light photography, and the improved focusing range adds another practical benefit to the upgrade.

Google has not yet provided official information about the minimum focusing distance, and it had not responded to Android Authority's request for clarification at the time of publication.
