Could the iPhone Air 2 Replace the Standard iPhone 18?

Apple could be preparing a surprising change to its iPhone lineup for 2027. A new rumor suggests the company is considering dropping the standard iPhone 18 and instead positioning the iPhone Air 2 as the entry-level model at around $999.

If true, that would be a significant departure from Apple's current strategy. The iPhone Air has so far been positioned as a distinct, ultra-thin option rather than a replacement for the regular iPhone. However, Apple's plans for the next generation may not be quite as settled as they appear.

iPhone Air 2 Could Take the iPhone 18 Name

The rumor comes from the X account Early Apple, which claims Apple is exploring the possibility of having the iPhone Air 2 take over the standard iPhone's name and $999 price position.

That would mean the Air 2 would no longer sit alongside the regular iPhone 18 as a separate model. Instead, Apple could make its thinner design the foundation of the mainstream iPhone lineup.

It is an interesting idea, but there is an important reason to remain cautious. Most leaks surrounding Apple's 2027 lineup have so far pointed toward three separate models: the iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and Air 2. These are expected to arrive in spring 2027, while the iPhone 18 Pro models and Apple's first foldable iPhone are expected to debut earlier.

With that roadmap appearing consistently across the rumor cycle, replacing the standard iPhone this quickly would be a major change.

Why Apple Could Eventually Move in This Direction

The rumor may be questionable, but the underlying idea is not completely unrealistic. Apple has frequently introduced new designs and technologies on particular models before gradually bringing them to more of the lineup.

The iPhone Air could follow a similar path. If Apple continues refining the design with the iPhone Air 2, the distinction between the Air and the standard iPhone could become less meaningful over time.

One particularly important rumored upgrade is a second rear camera for the Air 2. If that happens, one of the more obvious functional differences between the Air and the regular iPhone would disappear. At that point, Apple would have fewer reasons to maintain two models that appeal to similar buyers.

The company could eventually decide that the thinner Air design is simply the future of the mainstream iPhone.

The iPhone Air 2 Could Become More Practical

The first iPhone Air established its identity around being exceptionally thin and lightweight. That made it stand out, but it also involved compromises compared with Apple's more conventional iPhone models.

A second-generation model could address some of those compromises while keeping the defining slim design. Adding another camera would be one way to make the phone more versatile, particularly for users who want a premium everyday camera without moving up to a Pro model.

That kind of evolution would make the Air much easier to position as a mainstream iPhone rather than a niche alternative.

For users moving from an older iPhone, the transition would also involve more than choosing a new design. The $999 price point would also put the Air 2 in an interesting position. Rather than being an additional choice for buyers, it would become the phone that many customers encounter first when looking at Apple's mainstream lineup.

A Future Air and iPhone Could Become One

There is, however, a more believable version of this rumor.

Apple may not be planning to replace the iPhone 18 with the Air 2 in 2027, but the company could eventually move toward a lineup where the standard iPhone adopts the Air's design philosophy.

Leaker Jon Prosser previously suggested a similar possibility, arguing that Apple's ultra-thin design could eventually become the blueprint for the standard iPhone. That would fit Apple's usual approach of introducing a major design direction and gradually expanding it across its products.

If the Air 2 adds a second camera, improves its overall hardware and retains its slim profile, Apple could have a strong foundation for that transition.

For now, though, the safest expectation is that the iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 will remain separate products. The idea of Apple merging the two is intriguing, but the evidence is not strong enough to treat it as anything more than speculation.

Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and its first foldable iPhone first, with the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and Air 2 reportedly arriving in spring 2027. As more information emerges, we should get a clearer picture of whether the Air is simply another iPhone option or the beginning of a much bigger change to Apple's lineup.
