Honor Robot Phone: A Smartphone With a Built-In Gimbal


Smartphone cameras keep getting better, but Honor is taking a very different approach with the Honor Robot Phone. Instead of asking creators to attach a gimbal to their phone, Honor has built a miniature three-axis stabilizer directly into the device.

The result is an unusual phone that sits somewhere between a flagship smartphone and a handheld gimbal camera. Honor first showed the Robot Phone at MWC 2026, where its moving camera system quickly became one of the more memorable devices at the event. For now, however, the phone is only officially available in China, with Honor using a limited launch to gauge interest.

The gimbal is what makes the Honor Robot Phone different

The Robot Phone's defining feature is hidden inside the camera housing on its back. Honor has developed an extremely small gimbal motor weighing just 2.6 grams, allowing the stabilization mechanism to fit inside the phone itself.

When activated, the mechanism unfolds from the rear camera module and provides three-axis stabilization for the 200MP primary camera. The phone is approximately 9.6mm thick, excluding the camera unit, so the built-in hardware does come with a physical cost.

Using the gimbal is relatively straightforward. You slide the camera cover open, activate the feature through the camera or AI assistant, and watch the mechanism unfold. An on-screen interface then gives you controls for tracking, shooting modes and gimbal movement.

That makes the experience considerably simpler than using a standalone gimbal. Instead of carrying another device and learning a separate set of controls, you can frame, record and adjust your footage directly from the smartphone's large display.

A camera built for moving subjects

The main camera combines its 200MP sensor with an f/1.6 lens and traditional optical image stabilization. Honor also includes a 200MP telephoto camera with OIS and up to 2.7x optical zoom, along with a 50MP ultra-wide camera offering a 122-degree field of view. A 50MP front-facing camera handles conventional selfies.

But the real attraction is video stabilization. The Robot Phone can track people and objects while the gimbal physically follows their movement. Honor also offers AI-assisted shooting modes, including a 180-degree video spin effect.

Its super-steady mode is particularly interesting for creators who record while walking or moving quickly. The stabilization can compensate for significant movement, making handheld footage look much smoother without requiring a separate accessory.

There is still some learning involved. Subject tracking can occasionally lock onto the wrong person, particularly in crowded environments, so creators need to understand how the phone chooses and follows its target. Once that behavior becomes familiar, however, the system becomes much easier to control.

A smartphone that behaves like a camera

Honor has also worked with ARRI to develop parts of the camera experience, including the interface and LUT support. The Robot Phone can record in ARRI's LogC3 format, giving creators more flexibility during post-production.

LUTs can also be previewed while recording, which provides a useful middle ground between shooting standard smartphone footage and working with a more professional camera setup.

For anyone regularly creating travel videos, social content or short-form footage, this kind of setup could remove one of the biggest annoyances of mobile filmmaking: carrying extra equipment.

Before recording, though, creators still need to think about where their footage will go. A wifi content transfer option can be useful when moving large videos between compatible devices after a shoot, particularly when you do not want to rely on cables every time. The biggest problem may be the price

The technology is impressive, but the Robot Phone is not positioned as an affordable experiment.

Honor has priced the device at 9,999 yuan in China, which is roughly $1,500. A possible international launch could be considerably more expensive, especially considering the pricing of Honor's premium devices in markets such as the UK.

That makes the Robot Phone an interesting proposition rather than an obvious recommendation. A creator could potentially buy a conventional flagship smartphone and a separate gimbal for less, depending on the products chosen.

The advantage is convenience. There is something appealing about having stabilization hardware permanently available rather than remembering to pack, charge and mount another device every time you want smoother footage.

Durability is another question

Putting mechanical components inside a smartphone inevitably introduces another concern: moving parts can fail.

The Robot Phone has an IP54 rating when the gimbal is stored inside its housing, providing some protection against dust and water. That does not eliminate the risks associated with the exposed mechanical mechanism, especially during long-term use.

The more frequently the gimbal moves, the more important reliability becomes. Honor has clearly managed an impressive engineering feat by making the system small enough for a smartphone, but long-term durability will ultimately be easier to judge after the phone has been used by consumers for months or years.

Is the Honor Robot Phone the future of mobile cameras?

The Robot Phone feels less like a conventional smartphone upgrade and more like Honor testing an entirely new category.

Its built-in gimbal solves a real problem for mobile creators. You get stabilization, subject tracking, advanced video controls and a large smartphone display without carrying a separate gimbal. That is a compelling idea, particularly for travelers and creators who want professional-looking footage without a large camera bag.

The limitations are equally clear. The phone is expensive, mechanically more complicated than a standard smartphone, and currently restricted to the Chinese market.

Still, the concept is hard to ignore. If Honor can make the technology smaller, more durable and more affordable, a future version could turn the built-in gimbal from an experimental feature into something people genuinely expect from a creator-focused smartphone.
