iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo Get Apple's New C2 Modem

Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Duo, marking an important step in the company's move toward designing more of its own connectivity hardware. The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone, while both it and the iPhone 18 Pro models feature Apple's new custom-designed C2 modem for 5G connectivity.

The C2 modem had already attracted attention before the launch, particularly because of questions surrounding its support for mmWave 5G in the United States. Those concerns now appear to have been addressed, although there is an unexpected difference between the two Pro models.

iPhone 18 Pro Gets Apple's C2 Modem

Apple says the C2 modem brings improvements to cellular performance, including AI-powered enhancements intended to improve connection quality and reliability. The company also claims that the modem delivers noticeably faster upload speeds than the previous C1X while using approximately 15% less energy.

The C2 also supports mmWave 5G in the United States, which is important for carriers that rely on the technology for their fastest 5G connections.

However, Apple's specifications indicate that the iPhone 18 Pro Max may not use the C2 modem. The smaller iPhone 18 Pro appears to be the model receiving Apple's new modem, while the Pro Max reportedly continues to use a Qualcomm modem.

Apple has not explained why the two closely related Pro models use different modem solutions.

C2 Modem Supports mmWave 5G in the US

The C2's mmWave capabilities are particularly notable because earlier reports suggested Apple might still need Qualcomm hardware to provide mmWave support in the US.

Apple's US specifications list mmWave bands n258, n260, and n261, alongside sub-6GHz 5G with 4x4 MIMO. The UK specifications, meanwhile, list sub-6GHz connectivity without the same mmWave bands.

This means the connectivity experience can still vary depending on the market and carrier infrastructure.

Apple's N1 Chip Adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6

The C2 modem is not the only custom connectivity component arriving with the new iPhones.

Both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max feature Apple's N1 wireless networking chip. It enables support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, giving the latest iPhones a broader set of wireless connectivity capabilities.

Wi-Fi 7 should be particularly useful as compatible routers and networks become more widespread, while Bluetooth 6 and Thread expand the phones' ability to work with accessories and connected devices.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max Storage and Pricing

Apple is offering the iPhone 18 Pro in burgundy, glacier, silver, and black, with the starting price set at $1,199.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 and comes in the same color selection. Both models are available with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB of storage.

Pre-orders begin September 12.

The expanded storage options could be particularly useful for users who take large amounts of photos and video. A higher-capacity iPhone can also make upgrading easier because there is more room for transferring years of personal content from an older device.

iPhone Duo Brings Apple's First Foldable Design

The iPhone Duo is arguably the bigger story of Apple's latest launch.

As the company's first foldable iPhone, the Duo represents a significant change from Apple's traditional smartphone design. It starts at $1,999 and is available in star white and night sky.

Apple is offering the foldable with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage options, matching the storage range available on the Pro models.

Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo begin October 16, with the device scheduled to reach customers on October 23.
