iPhone 18 Pro Charging Speed Shows a Major Upgrade Over iPhone 17 Pro

Apple has given the iPhone 18 Pro models a meaningful upgrade to USB-C charging, and a new hands-on test offers a closer look at how much faster the latest iPhones can actually charge.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max reportedly reached a full charge in around 55 minutes when paired with a suitable high-powered charger. In comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro Max took approximately 81 minutes under testing conditions. That is a difference of about 26 minutes.

For people who regularly top up their phone throughout the day, that extra speed could be more useful than it sounds on paper.

iPhone 18 Pro Max Reaches 50% in 15 Minutes

Apple has already promoted faster charging as one of the iPhone 18 Pro lineup's improvements. A test from Xiaobai's Tech Reviews provides some real-world context for the company's claims.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max reportedly reached 50% battery capacity in about 15 minutes. The iPhone 17 Pro models took around 20 minutes to reach the same level.

The difference becomes more obvious during a full charging cycle. The iPhone 18 Pro Max completed the test from 0% to 100% in approximately 55 minutes, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max required about 81 minutes.

Of course, reaching the 100% indicator does not mean the battery stops receiving power instantly. Charging normally slows toward the end of the cycle as the phone manages temperature and battery health.

Charging Power Has Increased Too

The testing also showed a significant increase in peak charging power.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max reached approximately 52W during the first 12 minutes of the test. The iPhone 17 Pro Max previously reached about 36W in a separate ChargerLAB test.

Peak wattage should not be confused with sustained charging speed. Smartphones typically draw more power when the battery is low and gradually reduce the charging rate as the battery approaches full capacity.

Still, the higher peak suggests Apple has opened the door to considerably faster charging on its latest Pro models.

Faster Charging Makes Daily Top-Ups Easier

The practical benefit depends on your charging habits.

If you plug your iPhone in overnight, a faster charging system probably will not make a dramatic difference to your routine. But if you often leave home with a partially charged phone, those saved minutes become much more valuable.

A quick charge while getting ready, eating lunch, or preparing for a trip can give you a substantial battery boost without keeping the phone connected for an extended period.

This becomes particularly relevant when setting up a new phone. Moving photos, videos, messages, contacts, and other personal files between devices can take time, especially when you have years of content stored on your old phone.

A transfer app can simplify that process by helping users move important content without manually handling every file. Features such as fast share and easy file sharing can also be useful when transferring large collections of photos or videos between compatible devices.

The Charger Matters

There is one important detail to keep in mind if you want the fastest charging speeds.

Apple's technical specifications state that the iPhone 18 Pro models require a power adapter capable of delivering 60W or more with Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS) to achieve their maximum charging performance.

Apple sells a 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with a 60W maximum output for $39 through its U.S. online store.

A lower-powered charger will still charge the iPhone, but it will not necessarily deliver the same charging speeds shown in the latest test.

How Much Faster Is the iPhone 18 Pro Max?

The reported results give the new model a clear advantage in both early charging and total charging time.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max reached 50% in roughly 15 minutes, compared with around 20 minutes for the iPhone 17 Pro models. For a full charge, the newer model took approximately 55 minutes versus about 81 minutes for its predecessor.

Because the tests were conducted separately, these figures should not be treated as a perfectly controlled generation-to-generation laboratory comparison. They do, however, provide a useful indication of the improvement users can expect.

Is Faster Charging Worth It?

For many users, the biggest advantage is not the headline charging wattage. It is the amount of battery available after a short charging session.

Being able to reach half capacity in around 15 minutes can make a noticeable difference when you are heading out with a nearly empty phone. The shorter full-charge time is also useful for people who rely heavily on their iPhone throughout the day.

The smaller iPhone 18 Pro is expected to offer similar charging capabilities, although its actual charging times may differ because of its battery capacity and charging behavior.

Overall, the iPhone 18 Pro's charging upgrade looks like a practical improvement rather than a specification that simply sounds impressive. For users who regularly charge throughout the day, saving 20 or 30 minutes can turn a slow wait into a quick top-up.
