The iPhone 18 Pro Max comes with a larger battery than previous models, but there is an unusual detail to its battery management. Apple temporarily limits the battery capacity while the phone is being shipped from the factory.

The reason is simple: batteries above 20 Wh are subject to stricter transportation requirements in many regions. Apple has addressed this through firmware rather than changing the physical battery.

Why Apple limits the iPhone 18 Pro Max battery

The iPhone 18 Pro Max uses a battery with a capacity above 20 Wh. According to Apple, that puts the device under additional shipping requirements.

To meet those rules, Apple activates a Prepare to Ship setting before the phone leaves the factory. The software temporarily keeps the battery below the 20 Wh threshold during transportation.

Once you activate the iPhone, the restriction is automatically removed and the phone can use its full battery capacity.

So, if your new iPhone appears to have less battery capacity during setup or shipping, there is no need to worry. The limitation is temporary and does not mean the phone has a smaller physical battery.

How Prepare to Ship works

Apple also provides the Prepare to Ship feature for situations where you need to send an activated iPhone 18 Pro Max for repair, return, trade-in, or another shipment.

To access it:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Go to General.

  3. Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.

  4. Select Prepare to Ship.

  5. Follow the instructions on screen.

The iPhone may become warm while preparing because it can discharge the battery to reach the required level.

Once the process is complete, the device will show a Ready to Ship status.

What happens after you enable it?

Apple says that if Prepare to Ship is used for a repair, trade-in, or return, the iPhone can be limited to an 80% charge for up to 14 days.

After that period, users can disable the shipping preparation and return the phone to normal charging behavior.

This is worth remembering before sending the device away. The temporary limitation is related to transportation requirements, not everyday battery performance.
