iPhone Handoff in iOS 27 Lets You Use One Phone Number on Two iPhones

Apple is introducing a useful new feature with iOS 27 that could make switching between two iPhones much easier. Called iPhone Handoff, the feature will let users use the same phone number across two iPhones, allowing them to move between the devices without having to constantly swap SIM cards or change their cellular setup.

Apple briefly revealed iPhone Handoff during its WWDC 2026 keynote, but the company did not explain how the feature would actually work. Now, a demonstration shared by a MacRumors forum member has provided a closer look at the setup process and what users can expect.

How iPhone Handoff Works

iPhone Handoff is designed for people who regularly use two iPhones. For example, you might keep one device as your everyday phone while using another as a backup, a work phone or a larger device for specific tasks.

The feature can reportedly be configured through Settings > Cellular. During setup, users choose which iPhone will serve as the primary device and which one will act as the companion. The main iPhone keeps the user's existing eSIM, while the companion receives a secondary companion eSIM connected to the same phone number.

Once configured, users can switch the active phone number between the two devices. This means you could pick up either iPhone and continue using your number without going through the usual process of moving a physical SIM or setting up cellular service again.

Your Main iPhone Controls the Cellular Settings

Apple's approach keeps the primary iPhone at the center of the cellular setup. Cellular settings are managed from the main device, while the companion iPhone receives the necessary configuration to use the same number.

There is also an interesting detail involving location sharing. When the feature is active, Apple's location-sharing system will reportedly use whichever iPhone is currently handling the phone number. That could make the feature more practical for people who carry both devices throughout the day because their shared location should correspond with the phone they are actually using.

The demonstration currently comes from simulated iPhones running through Xcode 27's Device Hub rather than two commercially available devices. Still, it gives us a useful look at how Apple expects the feature to operate once iOS 27 reaches users.

Switching Phones Is More Than Just Moving a Number

Having the same phone number available on two iPhones solves one part of the problem, but switching devices can involve much more than cellular service. Your contacts, photos, apps, messages and other personal information may also need to be available on the device you decide to use.

That carrier dependency could determine how widely iPhone Handoff is adopted. The feature itself may be built into iOS 27, but users will only be able to take advantage of it if their carrier supports the necessary cellular functionality.

When Will iPhone Handoff Be Available?

iOS 27 has spent the past few months in beta testing and is expected to receive its public release later this month. Apple will likely provide more information about iPhone Handoff as the software update gets closer to its official rollout.

For people who use two iPhones, the feature could remove one of the biggest annoyances of managing multiple devices. Instead of treating each phone as a completely separate cellular device, iPhone Handoff could let both work around the same phone number, making it much easier to move from one to the other.
