Motorola Razr Flex Leak: A Smaller Wide Foldable Could Challenge the Galaxy Z Fold 8
The foldable phone market is getting more crowded, but Motorola may be taking a slightly different route with its next device.
After Apple and Samsung introduced their latest large foldable designs, Motorola appears to be preparing a compact alternative. New leaks suggest the company's upcoming wide foldable, reportedly known internally as the Razr Flex, could be smaller than both the iPhone Duo and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 in several key dimensions.
That makes the device particularly interesting. Instead of making a book-style foldable larger, Motorola seems to be exploring how much screen can fit into a smaller body.
The leaked information is not official, so the final hardware and design could still change. Here's what the current reports suggest.
How Small Could the Motorola Razr Flex Be?
Size appears to be one of the defining characteristics of the rumored Motorola foldable.
When unfolded, the Razr Flex is reportedly around 110 × 149mm, making it shorter and narrower than the iPhone Duo and Galaxy Z Fold 8.
The device could measure approximately 5.8mm thick when unfolded. That would make it slightly thicker than some competing foldables, but the difference could be worthwhile if it contributes to a smaller overall footprint.
Weight is also relatively restrained for a foldable. The leaked figure is approximately 215 grams.
For context, the reported iPhone Duo weighs around 254 grams, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is around 201 grams. That puts Motorola's rumored device between the two.
A 6.92-Inch Inner Display in a Smaller Body
The display configuration is where the Razr Flex becomes particularly intriguing.
According to the leak, the internal screen measures 6.92 inches, while the outer display comes in at 4.97 inches.
That means Motorola could deliver a nearly 7-inch folding screen without requiring the larger body associated with some competing book-style foldables.
The inner panel is also reportedly capable of a 165Hz refresh rate, which would be unusually high for a foldable smartphone. A higher refresh rate can make scrolling, animations, and supported games feel smoother, although it can also increase power consumption depending on how the display is managed.
The smaller outer screen could also make the folded device easier to handle for quick tasks such as checking notifications, answering messages, or making short interactions without opening the phone.
Motorola Is Going Beyond the Traditional Foldable Shape
Motorola already has experience with book-style foldables, including the Razr Fold introduced earlier this year.
The reported Razr Flex would take a different approach.
Rather than competing directly by matching the largest available inner displays, Motorola appears to be focusing on proportions and portability. That could give the company an opportunity to appeal to people who like the versatility of a foldable but do not want to carry a particularly large device.
It is still too early to know whether that approach will translate into a better everyday experience, but the design direction is certainly different from the usual race toward bigger screens.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Could Power the Razr Flex
The leaked specifications point to Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 as the processor.
That is an important detail because the rumored device is not expected to use Qualcomm's higher-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 or even the newer regular Gen 6 platform.
Motorola is reportedly pairing the processor with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage in a single configuration.
For everyday smartphone tasks, 12GB of RAM should provide plenty of room for multitasking. The more interesting question will be how Motorola balances performance and battery life inside a relatively compact foldable body.
Around 5,000mAh Battery and Possible Qi2 Charging
Battery capacity is reportedly around 5,000mAh.
That is a respectable figure for a device of this size, particularly considering that Motorola needs to power both the external display and the larger folding screen.
The phone could also support 25W Qi2 wireless charging. If the final device includes native Qi2 support, that could give it an advantage over some competing foldables by making compatible wireless charging accessories easier to use.
Charging specifications remain unconfirmed, however, so this is another area where Motorola's official announcement will be important.
IP48 and IP49 Protection
The leaked Razr Flex could also receive IP48 and IP49 ratings.
Those ratings suggest Motorola is paying attention to durability, which has become increasingly important as foldable phones move into the mainstream.
Foldable devices have more moving parts than conventional smartphones, particularly around the hinge and flexible display. As a result, protection against dust, water, and other environmental factors can be an important consideration for buyers.
The rumored ratings would still need to be confirmed by Motorola before they can be compared directly with the protection offered by other flagship foldables.
Moving to a New Foldable Means Managing Your Data
A new foldable can change how you use your phone, but upgrading also comes with the familiar task of moving everything from your old device.
That can mean transferring years of photographs, videos, documents, contacts, and other personal content. A device with a large internal display and generous storage can quickly become a new home for an even larger media library, making the initial transfer process worth planning before you start using the phone as your everyday device.
Smart Transfer can help simplify that transition. Its clone phone functionality is useful when moving information from an existing device to a new one, while tools such as its bookmark manager can help keep saved links and important web resources organized instead of leaving them scattered across multiple devices.
For people who take a lot of photos, a photo gallery manager can also make it easier to organize and manage a growing collection. That becomes particularly useful when moving to a foldable with more storage and a larger display that encourages you to keep more content readily available.
The goal is simple: get the new phone ready without spending hours manually searching for and transferring individual pieces of information.
Dual 50MP Cameras Could Handle Photography
The Razr Flex is also expected to feature a dual 50MP rear camera system.
The leak does not provide extensive details about the sensors or the exact roles of each camera, so it is too early to determine how the setup will compare with the more elaborate camera systems found on premium foldables.
Still, dual high-resolution cameras would give Motorola a solid foundation for everyday photography.
The final image quality will depend on more than megapixel counts, of course. Sensor size, lenses, stabilization, image processing, and Motorola's camera software will all influence the results.
Android 17 Expected Out of the Box
The rumored Razr Flex is expected to run Android 17.
That would give the phone access to Google's latest Android platform while allowing Motorola to add its own interface and foldable-specific features.
For a device with two displays, software optimization will be particularly important. The experience should ideally make switching between the outer and inner screens feel natural, while apps should be able to take advantage of the larger folding display where appropriate.
Motorola's software implementation could ultimately be just as important as the hardware when determining whether the compact foldable design works well in everyday use.
When Could the Motorola Razr Flex Launch?
There is still no official launch date for the rumored Razr Flex.
The device remains based on leaked information and reported specifications, so Motorola could change the hardware, naming, or release plans before making an announcement.
For now, the reported combination of a compact body, 6.92-inch internal display, 4.97-inch outer screen, Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, 5,000mAh battery, and possible Qi2 charging gives the device a distinctive position among upcoming foldables.
Could a Smaller Foldable Be the Next Big Trend?
The Razr Flex is interesting because Motorola does not appear to be following the simplest path.
While the foldable market has generally moved toward larger screens and increasingly powerful hardware, this device could take the opposite approach by focusing on a smaller footprint while retaining a nearly 7-inch internal display.
If the leaks prove accurate, Motorola may be betting that some users want the flexibility of a book-style foldable without the size and weight associated with the largest models.
That is a concept worth watching. The real test, however, will come when Motorola confirms the device and users can see how the smaller dimensions affect battery life, usability, cameras, durability, and the overall foldable experience.
