Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra Could Bring Back Exynos in a Major Twist


Samsung’s Galaxy S27 lineup is already shaping up to be an interesting one. The company is expected to introduce a new Pro model alongside the familiar Galaxy S27, Galaxy S27 Plus, and Galaxy S27 Ultra. However, the biggest surprise may not be the design changes rumored for the Ultra. It could be hiding inside the phone.

A new report claims Samsung may bring the Exynos 2700 to the Galaxy S27 Ultra in selected markets. That would be a notable change for the Ultra lineup, particularly because recent expectations have pointed toward a Snapdragon-only strategy for Samsung’s most expensive Galaxy S model.

If the report turns out to be accurate, Samsung could once again split its flagship hardware between regions, giving some customers an Exynos-powered Galaxy S27 Ultra while others receive a Snapdragon version.

Galaxy S27 Ultra Could Use the Exynos 2700 in Some Markets

According to South Korean publication Money Today, Samsung is reportedly preparing an Exynos 2700-powered version of the Galaxy S27 Ultra. The report was also highlighted by tipster Jukan.

That claim goes against earlier expectations that the Galaxy S27 Ultra would rely exclusively on Qualcomm’s next flagship Snapdragon processor. Samsung could instead adopt a dual-chip strategy, similar to approaches it has used with previous Galaxy generations.

Under the rumored arrangement, selected markets would receive the Exynos 2700 version, while markets such as the US would likely continue to get a Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S27 Ultra.

This would also mark a significant return for Exynos in Samsung’s Ultra lineup. The last Ultra model to use an Exynos processor was the Galaxy S22 Ultra, released several generations ago.

Samsung May Still Keep Snapdragon in the Lineup

Samsung does not appear ready to completely abandon Qualcomm. The Galaxy S27 Ultra is still expected to use a high-end Snapdragon processor in some regions, potentially the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro or whatever name Qualcomm ultimately gives its top-tier chip.

That means the Galaxy S27 Ultra could effectively become two slightly different phones depending on where you buy it.

On paper, that might not sound like a major problem. Both processors would be designed to deliver flagship-level performance. But regional chip differences can become important when factors such as sustained performance, gaming, heat management, battery efficiency, and software optimization enter the picture.

For buyers, the question will not simply be which processor looks faster on a specification sheet. The more important question is how each version behaves after prolonged use.

Exynos 2700 Performance Could Be the Reason for the Switch

There may be a performance-related reason behind Samsung’s reported decision.

Yonhap News previously reported that Samsung had been testing the Exynos 2700 against different versions of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. Those internal tests reportedly showed the Exynos chip delivering a 19% CPU performance advantage over the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 6 and around a 10% advantage over the Pro version.

The reported results also point toward improvements in GPU and NPU performance.

Those numbers certainly sound impressive, but benchmark results only tell part of the story. A phone can achieve excellent scores in short tests and still struggle when the processor has to maintain high performance for extended periods.

That distinction could be particularly important for a phone like the Galaxy S27 Ultra, which is likely to attract users who expect demanding gaming, video recording, multitasking, and AI features to work consistently.

Benchmarks Do Not Tell the Whole Story

There is already a useful example of why performance charts should be treated carefully.

Previous testing involving the Galaxy S26 Plus found that its Exynos 2600 could outperform the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in certain benchmark scenarios. However, the advantage did not necessarily translate into better real-world performance.

Once the phone became hot, the Exynos processor showed signs of its thermal limitations.

That is the challenge Samsung will need to solve with the Exynos 2700. Strong peak performance is valuable, but sustained performance could matter even more. If Samsung can keep temperatures under control while maintaining high performance, the new Exynos chip could become a much more compelling option.

Battery efficiency could also become an important part of the equation. If the Snapdragon version remains faster under sustained workloads, Samsung could potentially offset some of that difference if the Exynos model offers better power efficiency.

Moving to a New Galaxy Could Also Mean Moving More Data

Processor differences aside, a new flagship launch usually means another round of phone upgrades. And that brings up a much less glamorous but very practical concern: getting everything from your current phone onto the new one.

Photos, videos, contacts, documents, apps, and other personal files can quickly add up, especially if you have been using the same phone for several years. Depending on the devices involved, users may look for options ranging from wifi content transfer to dedicated migration tools when setting up a new device.

Samsung's own ecosystem provides tools for moving information between compatible devices, but people switching between platforms or looking for additional flexibility may also explore alternatives. What This Could Mean for Galaxy S27 Ultra Buyers

If Samsung does launch Exynos and Snapdragon versions of the Galaxy S27 Ultra, buyers may have another specification to investigate before purchasing.

The processor itself will obviously matter, but so will the market in which the phone is sold. Buyers could eventually need to compare sustained performance, gaming results, thermals, battery endurance, and network compatibility rather than simply checking whether the phone is labeled as a Galaxy S27 Ultra.

For Samsung, the strategy could offer another opportunity to prove that Exynos can compete at the highest level. The reported Exynos 2700 benchmark results are encouraging, but real-world testing will ultimately be more important than internal numbers.

The Galaxy S27 series is still some distance from its expected launch, so details can change before Samsung makes anything official. For now, the rumored Exynos 2700-powered Galaxy S27 Ultra represents one of the more unexpected developments surrounding Samsung’s next flagship generation.

If the company can deliver strong sustained performance and efficient thermal management, Exynos could make a meaningful comeback. If not, buyers may once again see a noticeable difference between Galaxy models sold in different regions.
