T-Mobile Charges $5 a Month for Apple's New iPhone Handoff Feature


Apple's iOS 27 introduces iPhone Handoff, a feature that lets users share one phone number between two compatible iPhones. T-Mobile is among the first carriers to support it in the U.S., but customers will have to pay an additional $5 per month.

The feature is designed for people who regularly use two iPhones and want to switch between them without manually moving their cellular service.

How iPhone Handoff Works

After activating iPhone Handoff through Settings > Cellular, users can designate one iPhone as the primary device and another as the secondary device.

The shared number automatically becomes active on whichever iPhone is unlocked. Users can make calls, send texts, use cellular data, and access mobile hotspot features from the active device.

Both iPhones cannot use the shared number at the same time.

There are also some limitations. Certain IDs, corporate badges, and transit passes stored in Apple Wallet may remain restricted to one device. Apple Watch users should also pair their watch with the iPhone they use most because Handoff does not automatically switch the watch between devices.

iPhone Handoff Is Not a Data Transfer Tool

Sharing a phone number between two iPhones is different from moving personal content.

When setting up a new device, users may still need a transfer my data too that can help transfer photos, contacts, videos, documents, and other files. The feature is currently available to T-Mobile customers in the U.S. and Deutsche Telekom customers in Germany. Verizon and EE are expected to add support later this year.

T-Mobile's $5 monthly charge makes the feature an optional add-on rather than a standard part of its wireless service.

Is iPhone Handoff Useful?

For people who regularly carry two iPhones, Handoff offers a straightforward way to use the same number across both devices.

For everyone else, the feature is less essential. Those replacing an old iPhone should also remember that Handoff does not replace the normal process of transferring their photos, contacts, messages, and other personal content.

Apple's approach is ultimately about making two iPhones behave more like connected devices, but carrier availability and the monthly fee remain important considerations for anyone interested in using it.
