How to Use Write with Siri on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Apple is bringing its AI writing assistance deeper into everyday tasks with Write with Siri, a feature available across macOS 27 Golden Gate, iOS 27, and iPadOS 27.

Instead of opening a separate AI writing tool whenever you need help with text, Write with Siri works directly where you are already typing. You can ask it to create a draft, rewrite something you've already written, adjust the tone, or refine your wording without leaving the app you're using.

Whether you're writing an email, responding to a message, working in Notes, or drafting something in another supported application, the feature is designed to make writing assistance part of the normal Apple interface.

What Is Write with Siri?

Write with Siri uses Apple Intelligence to generate or modify text based on instructions you provide.

For example, you could ask it to write a professional response to an email, make a paragraph friendlier, shorten a long message, or expand a few ideas into a more complete piece of writing.

The feature works across Apple's own applications, including Mail, Messages, Notes, Safari, and Pages. Third-party apps can also support Write with Siri when they have added compatibility for the feature.

The biggest advantage is that you don't have to copy your text into another application to get help. The writing assistance appears directly within your current workflow.

What You Need Before Using Write with Siri

There are a few requirements before Write with Siri will appear on your Apple devices.

You need to have Siri's AI functionality enabled on a compatible device. Your device also needs to be running macOS 27 Golden Gate, iOS 27, iPadOS 27, or a later version of the operating system.

The app you're using must support the feature as well. If Write with Siri does not appear, checking for updates for both your operating system and the individual app is a good place to start.

Once those requirements are met, you can use Write with Siri from compatible text fields throughout your device.

How to Use Write with Siri on Mac

Using Write with Siri on a Mac is straightforward.

First, open an application that supports the feature and click inside a text field. This could be Mail, Notes, Safari, Pages, or another compatible app.

Look for the floating Siri control and select it. This expands into the Write with Siri interface.

You can then describe what you want Siri to write.

For example, you might enter:

Write a professional and friendly email reply to Bob expressing excitement about the November conference.

Siri will process the request and place the generated text directly into your current document or text field.

You can accept the first version or ask Write with Siri to change it.

How to Use Write with Siri on iPhone

The process is similar on an iPhone, although the control is positioned differently.

Open a compatible app and tap inside a text field. When the feature is available, you'll see Write with Siri above the keyboard.

Tap the option and enter your instructions.

You can ask Siri to create something from scratch or work with text you have already entered. Once the response is generated, it will appear directly in the current writing area.

This makes the feature particularly useful for quick tasks where opening a separate AI writing application would be unnecessary.

How to Use Write with Siri on iPad

Write with Siri works in much the same way on an iPad.

Tap into a supported text field and select the floating Siri control. From there, describe the type of content you want to create or explain how you want your existing text changed.

Because the iPad is often used for longer writing sessions, this can be particularly convenient when you're working on emails, notes, assignments, or other documents.

You Can Rewrite Text, Too

Write with Siri is not limited to generating text from a blank page.

One of its more useful functions is rewriting existing content.

After generating or selecting text, you can give Siri more specific instructions about what needs to change. For example, you can ask it to:

  • Make the writing more professional

  • Make the message friendlier

  • Shorten the text

  • Expand an idea

  • Change the overall tone

  • Turn a short idea into several paragraphs

This makes the feature useful even when you already know what you want to say but need help expressing it more effectively.

Write with Siri Can Help When You Are Stuck

AI writing assistance can be especially useful when the difficult part is simply getting started.

If you're staring at an empty document because you don't know how to begin an email, assignment, article, or creative project, Write with Siri can provide an initial draft that gives you something to work with.

You can then edit the result yourself or ask Siri to change specific parts.

It is not necessarily about having the AI write everything for you. In many cases, its biggest value is removing the blank-page problem and giving you a starting point.

Using Write with Siri Across Apple Devices

One advantage of Apple's ecosystem is that writing workflows can move between devices. You might begin an email on your iPhone, continue working on an iPad, and finish it on a Mac.

That same flexibility can make device upgrades easier to manage, especially when your files, contacts, photos, and other personal information need to move with you.

If you're setting up a new Apple device, Smart Transfer can help with the practical side of moving content between phones and other supported devices. A tool like this can be useful when you want to Tmobile contact transfer or Tmobile data transfer as part of switching devices, particularly when you want to bring important information with you rather than rebuilding your setup manually.

You can also use Smart Transfer when you need to copy phone file data between devices, making the transition less dependent on moving individual files one at a time.

How to Turn Off Write with Siri

At the moment, disabling Write with Siri completely requires disabling Siri functionality itself.

That may not be ideal for users who want to keep Siri enabled but simply do not want the Write with Siri control appearing whenever they enter text.

There is a partial workaround through Screen Time restrictions.

Go to the Siri-related restrictions under Screen Time and disable Writing Tools or Writing Assistance. This can prevent the writing feature from working, although it does not necessarily remove the Write with Siri button from every text field.

Mac users who are comfortable working in Terminal also have another option. A Terminal command can be used to disable the floating Write with Siri button on macOS 27 Golden Gate.

Is Write with Siri Worth Using?

Write with Siri is most useful when treated as an extension of the writing tools already built into your Apple devices rather than as a replacement for your own writing.

It can help when you need a quick draft, a cleaner version of something you've written, or a different tone for a message. It can also provide a starting point when you're struggling to get words onto the page.

The fact that it works directly inside compatible apps makes it more convenient than constantly switching between applications.

Whether you use it occasionally or make it part of your daily workflow will ultimately depend on how comfortable you are with AI-assisted writing.

For now, Apple is clearly making these tools a more integrated part of iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Write with Siri is one of the clearest examples of that shift, putting AI writing assistance directly where you already type.
